Allen Frances, M.D. was born in New York City and conducted his pre-medical studies at Columbia College. He completed his medical school education at Downstate Medical Center and subsequently did his psychiatric residency here at NYSPI/CPMC. He received his certification in psychoanalysis from Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center and has been a professor of psychiatry at Cornell Medical Center and a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia. He served as chair of the APA’s DSM-IV task force. Dr. Frances was professor and chair of the department of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center where he remains professor emeritus. He has been the principal investigator of the Expert Consensus Practice Guidelines as well as for the Focused and General Field Trials of the DSM-IV. He has conducted research in the areas of depression, schizophrenia, and HIV. He was the founding editor of the Journal of Practical Psychiatry & Behavioral Health and the Journal of Personality Disorders and has published over 250 articles in the professional literature in areas as diverse as psychotherapy, personality diagnosis, nosology and research methodology.
