John C. Markowitz, M.D. got his BA cum laude, and MA (in Art History) from Columbia, and his MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. He completed a residency in Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Payne Whitney Clinic, where he was Chief Resident. He is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College, adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia, and research psychiatrist at The New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Dr. Markowitz conducts research on psychotherapy and medication as treatments for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. He teaches and supervises interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), supportive psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. He has authored 16 books, of which two are in French and one in Italian. Dr. Markowitz has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and over 60 chapters in books in addition to numerous review articles and manuals. He has been the principal investigator or co-investigator of more than 20 grants.
