Kees van Heeringen, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Chair of the Division of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, and Director of the Unit for Suicide Research at the University of Ghent, Belgium. He is vice-president of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

Dr. van Herringen serves on editorial boards and advisory committees at regional, national and multi-national levels involved in mental health issues such as the treatment and prevention of depression and suicide. His main research interests include the cognitive neuropsychiatry and functional neuroimaging of suicidal behavior.

Dr. van Heeringen has published more than 100 scientific papers and 7 books, including The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempted Suicide and Understanding Suicidal Behaviour: the Suicidal Process Approach to Research, Treatment and Prevention.
