Adult attention deficit disorder
Anorexia
Do you find that a lot of vegans and others who follow strict vegetarian diets have underlying eating disorders?
I am 27 years old. I started restricting my food at the age of 12. Between the ages of 17 and 24, I was hospitalized 10 times for my anorexia, in addition to going to IOPs and PHPS, until i finally went to residential treatment. From there, I had 3 and a half months of "recovery". About 6 months ago, I relapsed. I am about 5'4 and weighed in at 97lbs, which i don't think is bad. I was hospitalized for two weeks, and am now in a partial care program. I dont' think that it is helping. Although I"m eating much more than i was before going inpatient, my thoughts are more disordered and stronger than ever...is it possible to recover after relasping again? I feel longer term programs are needed, but i have no insurance...i feel hopeless that i can recover agian, after having so long in between relapses, and having such a long history of anorexia. Thanks!
I have a friend 22 years old. She has lost weight dramatically over the past 6 months. Last time I saw her she was approximately 42 kilos and she is 1.56 cm. I saw her again this christmas and she has lost more weight. Her eating habbits indicate an eating disorder as she only eats salads and little white meat such as chicken or turkey. She has always been concerned with her weight, she has also problems with her family from a young age. Her attitude has changed dramatically, from an outgoing person full of life she has become very quiet and has withdrawn from her old friends. She spends a lot of time at home and rarely goes out. She says that she wants to gain weight but yet still diets. I have tried speaking to her mother and her sister but it seems that they are in denial. I have spoken to her other friends but they are in the same situation as me; they do not know what to do.
She is currently in Greece at the moment but will be moving to new york in a few days. What would you advise me to do ?
I've had anorexia for 8 months now. I'm 5 ft. 6 in. tall and weigh 75 lbs. I've been given an eating plan by my therapist which I'm trying to stick to, but I've started taking diet pills because I don't want to put on weight. Can this do harm to my body and could I stop seeing my doctor if I wanted to or can you be forced to see the doctor?
Anxiety
Are alcohol and marijauna triggers for anxiety attacks?
My friend has GAD. She smokes marijuana on a daily basis and also has a few drinks at least three nights a week. She usually has anxiety attacks the morning after these activities. I tend to think that these activities enhance the chances of an anxiety attack while she does not.
Any insight into this?
Can anxiety disorder be cured?

I have been diagnosed with GAD and secondary agoraphobia.
Does GAD involve having weird, obsessional thoughts? Also, have you heard of Wellbutrin in treating GAD?
Does depression cause lack of concentration and focus or anxiety? I cannot seem to get anything done in university.
I have been on wellbutrin and now my doctor is switching me to celexa. How does it differ?
I have been suffering from anxiety and panic attacks for more then 13yrs of my 30yrs of my life. I have been on every anti anxiety and anti depressant medication on the market besides "mao" medication. Nothing works and if it does it's only for a short period of time.
I have anxiety attacks everyday and 3 to 4 times a year i call the ambulance and get rushed to the nearest emergency room for my panic attacks. I am currently on 40 mgs of lexapro, xanax xr 1mgs and xanax short acting 2mgs a day. I am running out of meds to take and, most importantly, hope of a cure or some relief.
I have been taking 2 mgs of Diazepam on an as- needed basis for several years. I noticed that if I go 4 or 5 days without it, I get very tired and light-headed. Can you become addicted to that small of a dose?
I have had very bad anxiety for about a month now and would really like some help. Where do I turn?
If you go off of an SSRI and then go back on, will it lose its effectiveness ?
My 29 year old son began having panic attacks 10 years ago. The frequency and intensity have gotten better in the last few years until recently when he had two attacks within 48 hours that resulted in loss of consciousness. A roomate present at the first of these said it looked like my son was having a seizure. My son is self employed in NYC and does not have insurance. First question: can panic attacks result in a seizure? And does your institution offer sliding scale assessment/treatment options?
Thank you.
My daughter has been diagnosed with anxiety. She is 16. She is presently not attending school. She is able to go out with friends and sometimes go places with our family. She stays in bed until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. I feel her biological clock is messed up.
She had trouble leaving the house when she was 9, she did go to school only. Then again in 7th grade she stopped going to school at the end of the year and returned to school in January of 10th grade. She was great. She had a 3.8 average all of freshman year and she was weaned off prozac . Last Feb when she got onto 10 mg Prozac she couldn't go places, because she was anxious again. She tried to go to school but could not. As they increased the Prozac again, nothing worked and at 40 mg, she became manic.
Now she is on Effexor, and seems good but cannot get back to school. She has home instruction but there are days she won't get out of bed and doesn't know why. Some days she can't go, and I think it is because she didn't understand an assignment. Other days I think OCD thoughts keep her in bed.
How do we help with her biological clock? Should we use melatonin? Should she be reevaluated? She wants to go to school but doesn't know why she doesn't go.
Right now we need a therapist too her txpist is moving. Do you think she needs to go to a hospiatl for intensive therapy? She isn't suicidal , she does not use drugs or alcohol. This is a puzle and we need guidance. Thank you.
My husband has been suffering from anxiety and depression for quite some time. He had been seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist for this health issue for years and has tried several different meds (ie. Celexa, Paxil). His doctor found that Clonazepam works well with him and his dose was adjusted several times. He was taking 1 mg of Clonazepam - 1 to 3 tablets a day.
However, due to his health insurance, he completely stopped seeing physicians and stopped taking medications all together about 2 months ago.
He states he feels fine without meds.
Is it safe for him to discontinue Clonazepam completely without a psychiatrist monitoring him? He was also prescribed testosterone injections, which he completely stopped.I would like him to see his physicians to get evaluated at least.

My mother, now 52, is in denial of her bipolar disorder and refuses to be treated. She checked herself into a hospital at age 19 when she was having suicidal thoughts, and has been in and out of therapy all her life, but has never really been confronted with a diagnosis. She is severely manic right now, and has become a threat to herself and others around her. Is it appropriate to force her to go to the hospital at this point? And if so, how should I go about taking that sort of action?
My sister-in-law, 48, has serious, chronic mental illness and lives in a transitional home for psychiatric patients. Recently, she was sent to the ICU because of toxic levels of lithium in her system. How can this crisis occur in a transitional home?

Hi there, I have suffered with depression and anxiety for many years now and in my last treatment was offered CBT. I found this ineffective and think that its widespread use is overhyped. Personally I feel therapies like excercise, yoga and meditation are more helpful.
I am struggling with an eating disorder( Bulimia, currently in the restricting phase).
I have also been diagnosed with Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Depression, Bipolar 2, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
I have been in treatment for 30 years. There has been improvement with the depression, but the anxiety has been essentially treatment-resistant. The eating disorder is newer. My Dr. says that it is "iatrogenic", as it was triggered by an anti-depressant.
I have been treated by some of the "top" doctors in Manhattan, taken practically every psychotropic medication on the market, including the tricyclics, the MAOIs, SSRIs, mood stablizers, anti-anxiety medications, etc. I have even been given medications that were imported from Europe and Canada. I have also been in therapy for 30 years, since I was 17.
Is there any possibility that I can improve at this point in life- I am now 47 - or should I just accept that this is the best quality of life that can be achieved?
I am not able to work, and it is hard just to get through the day.
I would be so grateful if you can help me or point me in the right direction.
Thank you for any suggestions you may offer me.
I greatly appreciate any advice you can give me.

Depression
A nurse recently added 300 mg Wellbutrin XL to the 40 mg citalopram I am taking and said maybe I should take just the Wellbutrin in the future. Is it dangerous for me to take two antidepressants? I am female and 56 and also take Synthroid and 40 mg lisinopril.

I went recently for many tests: cardio, Lyme disease, candida, thyroid, kidney, liver. They are negative but I still shake inside and have the pain described above.

I've read about SPECT tests used in the diagnosis of depression, besides the mental examination of course. How reliable are they? Why aren’t they widely used yet? And how can I trust a diagnosis that is solely based on a conversation, no matter how long and/or extensive it is and even after ruling out other causes through a physical examination?
My son attended a rehab center for substance abuse at the age of 14. He is now 16 and is involved with AA and is seeing a therapist. He has been sober for over 2 years. He is on celexa and wellbutrin. Although he has made progress, he is very unmotivated, not curious and flat in expression. His IQ is above normal. What can be done to help him live a more positive and active life ?
My son will be 14yrs by April 2008. Since the last few months, he has had fears of death. He hates the word "TERRORIST" and is afraid of terrorism. He has the phobia that soon we will all die, and he will be left alone. Previously, he was a lively child surrounded with friends and was a fun loving boy. Now since the last 5-6 months, he prefers to be alone and likes to be in his room and does not want to mingle with any of his peer groups. On the other hand, he prefers to be with boys elder to him. He is not interested in studies anymore and is not participating in any sports or extra curricular activities.
I am genuinely worried about my son because now I find him totally a different individual. Please help me out.

Why do people with severe depression often complain about having tremendous pain in many areas of their body, specifically head, stomach, esophagus and chest and what causes constipation if they're still eating, but in smaller amounts?
Why would depression medication lower or obliterate reflux problems? My friend is reflux free now that she is on depression medication, and the change was immediate. She has had major reflux and excess acid problems for over 15 years and the last year had reflux problems even after drinking water. She's taken most of the reflux medications out there until the doctor pressed her to take depression medicine (the doctor felt she was depressed) my friend believes she was stressed not depressed.
Would you say the causes of depression are mostly genetic, societal or environmental?

Eating Disorders
A female friend, who is 5' 2 "tall and weighed 103 pounds, has lost 20 pounds over 2 years. Her main complaint is burning in her GI tract. She believes it is reflux and gastritis, and her GI doctors call it visceral hypersensitivity.
This burning and a lack of response to traditional GI therapies have thrown her into a deep depression, acute anxiety and insomnia. She is afraid to eat because of the subsequent burning.
Nothing has worked for her. Is this an eating disorder? How do you get someone to eat if they are so afraid of pain from eating?
Do antidepressants work in the treatment of Anorexia?
Hello. I'm a 23 yr old woman who has an eating disorder. I've been diagnosed and treated for bulimia and over exercise. I also restrict my calories. Currently, I'm living on the upper east side and working full time in a very stressful environment and have gained quite a bit of weight. It's been extremely challenging for me to lose weight and I need help. Are there any programs or support groups that you can suggest to help me lose weight in a healthful way.
I am a runner and was told that my stress fracture may mean I have an eating disorder. Could this be true?
I have been suffering from depression and an eating disorder for a couple of years. Although, I have been in treatment for the eating disorder and have made some progress, the depression is still debilitating and feels endless. Some professionals have told me that anti-depressants are not effective if you are at a low weight.
Has this been studied and do you believe it to be true? At what BMI do anti-depressants work effectively?
I think my friend might have an eating disorder, she has lost a lot of weight over the last few months. She is 5ft. 7in. and weighs approximately 8st. I've noticed she only eats in the evening {crisps, nuts or fitness bars}. What can i do to help her?
I'm 5ft 7ins tall and weigh 8stone. This isn't too underweight is it? I eat {evenings only} crisps or nuts.
I'm an 18 year old female and although my diagnosis is EDNOS, i struggle from restricting and over exercising with periods of bulimic behaviors. I recently noticed that, when alone, i will prepare large amounts of food and pick it apart eating a minimal amount until it is unsatisfying enough to through away. I have no idea where this behavior came from. In a sense it's a binge because I get a sort of "high" from seeing all the food, but i also get a "high" from throwing it all away. Does this behavior fit specifically into Anorexia or Bulimia, or is it just another disordered way of eating?

Ethics
Family issues
Without thinking things through, I left my home state, my family, and most of my personal possessions to be with a man who promised me a good relationship. However, his overbearing ex-wife is intrusive and possessive, and I think he is trying to punish her by attempting to "win" the kids (two adults and a teen). This means he gives them no guidance or discipline, and as a result, they are spoiled and seem to have no conscience. On top of this, they incessantly text their father on his cell phone and he never stops answering, even during private moments.
How can I get out of this relationship without angering him so we could still be friends? Every time I hint at ending things, he flies off the handle.

I have heard that dawn simulators can achieve the same results as light therapy in the treatment of S.A.D. Is this true? If so, are there any specifications regarding the type of dawn simulator?
I haven’t heard of negative air ionization therapy before. What is it?
I was just wondering what your studies have shown on the application and effectiveness of broad vs. full spectrum light box sources for bright light therapy solutions. From what I have read, it looks like full spectrum might be the way to go as long as the light source is radiation sheilded and grounded. What do you think?
I work in a cubicle with 6-foot high panels, so I don't get any natural light during the day. I have just started using a 10,000 lux light box upon waking. Would it be helpful to also use a desk lamp version of the light box for a short period of time while I am at work?
In the answer to another question you distinguished between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum ligths. What is the difference, and what kinds of lights produce each?
Is halogen light (provided any UV is filtered out and one can stand the heat) an alternative light generating method for light therapy?
Is it possible that working in an office (for between 3-7 hours at a time) with no natural light at all, and fluorescent tubes that are not designated "full spectrum light" might cause continual depression similar to SAD?
What exactly is Light Deprivation? I live in Illinois and around this time every year I feel "blue", not depressed per say, just kind of "blue".
I find that if I visit a tanning salon, maybe once a week, it does seem to help. But I would like a clear definition, and is tanning really helping?

Medical illness and psychiatric disorders
Are there doctors who specialize in medical illnesses that cause worsening of psychiatric disorders?
Can you tell me if there is a causative link between schizophrenia and primary generalized epilepsy or between chlozaril and epileptic seizures?
Having a mental illness makes one more likely to have a medical condition. This is due to numerous reasons, genetics, stress, medications, and probably because medical conditions are frequently overlooked when your mentally ill. This needs to change!
Are there advocacy groups that fight for thorough medical workups for all of the mentally ill? Psychiatrists need to instead of just focusing on trying to find the perfect cocktail of medications for their patients, or delving into strange psychobabble ideology; incorporate other fields of medicine into their treatment regiment; especially, when previous treatments have proven to be unsuccessful.
Psychiatrist should be well rounded physicians especially in fields that can effect mental health like neurology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, cardiology, etc. The treatment of the mentally ill needs to change.
My son is now 18 and going to be 19 and I am searching for help to get him a proper diagnosis.

There are so many medical conditions that can superficially manifest themselves as psychiatric conditions. Isn't it about time that psychiatry treat not just the symptoms but become well versed in figuring out the possible physical reasons?

My son is 27 years old. He is a compulsive liar and a recovering drug addict. His addiction was opiod prescription drugs; he completed a 3 year zaboxan program.
Throughout 2009 my son lived with me and at other times with his father. He then became homeless after he stole money and property from both homes. On December 31st he was arrested for stealing lidocaine from a hospital. He served about two weeks prior to his father bailing him out. During his incarceration, he was raped multiple times. His father and I came together to support him and to help him through this trauma, getting him to doctors, a psychiatrist, counseling, etc.
My son currently lives with his father. He is on Xanax and sleeping medication. His psychiatrist terminated treatment because she felt that the trust level was violated at his second appointment. He currently has no psychiatrist referral.
This week my son felt so out of control he punched a picture on his wall and now has very exteme hand injury. The phrase "1 step forward and 2 steps back" feels like progress compared to how son's progress. He seems to be spiraling down with no steps going forward. My son has yet to deal with his trauma of being raped, or just the fact that his lying and drug addiction is how his life has become what it is. Although he is not doing "drugs", I dont believe he has chosen recovery. He is a drug addict that is not doing drugs. His life is still unmanageable for not only him but for his father and me. He has exhausted our finances due to the fact his father and I paid out thousands of dollars since Janauary to pay off drug dealers he owed money to during those times he sold drugs to support himself.
After coming home to his father's house after incarceration, drug dealers showed up at this house threatening harm to my son or any family member if they didn't get the money they were owed. So, we did whatever it took to get them paid. I believe my son needs professional long term care. I'm not even sure what long term would mean. I just know that he needs more than 5 days or 2 weeks of a detox program. Post-traumatic stress disorder along with Personality disorder seems to fit my son's existence. My son is on Medicaid.
Is there any help or direction you can provide me?? Your hospital seems perfect, but perhaps you know better. I thought if my son called his primary physician (who has only seen my son once) and explained that his life was in crisis, to convey all of the above to his doctor, perhaps this doctor would see my son really needs more help than an anti-depressant. Please let me know your thoughs...does your hospital take Fidelius Medicaid? What would it cost if you felt my son was a candidiate to be at your hospital and how would you be able to help him?? Thank you for taking the time for reading this.

My mother has had schizophrenia for the last 20 years. I am 23 years old and feeling less motivation and sometime get upset about past bad experiences.
My mother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia at a very young age and has suffered from the condition for over 40 years.
I am 19 years old and seeing gradual changes in my behavior patterns. These changes could be due to growth or hormonal changes given my age, however, given my inherited traits this could be cause for concern.

My nephew was diagnosed as psychotic at the age of 15 yrs old. He is now 22 yrs. old. He used to volunteer but has stopped. He is completely socially isolated. The family believes he has schizophrenia. How can we help him since he states he is fine and only has a social anxiety problem?
My sister has been at home for more than 10 years since leaving college without completing a degree. She has become increasingly withdrawn since she returned home. She currently does not leave the house and only speaks to and sees my mother, although my parents live in the same house. She communicates with my father and me only through notes, and stays in her room whenever anyone is at the house besides my mother.
I have not been able to see her for three years (during my visits several times yearly), although we had had a good relationship. She was treated in the involuntary ward of a psychiatric hospital for a few weeks 9 years ago. In consultation with several psychiatrists, my father had her admitted. My mother was strongly opposed to the hospitalization and verbally abused my father when she arrived home and discovered that my sister had been admitted.
My sister took several medications during her hospitalization. After returning home, she continued to take Zyprexa for 1-2 months and met regularly with her psychiatrist for a year. My mom has always been in denial of the situation, and agreed with my sister that continuing with psychiatric care was unnecessary at that time. My mother still vacillates on whether my sister is in fact ill. My father avoids acting on the situation out of fear of my mother, who blames him for his prior actions.
I care deeply about the situation but am geographically far from the family. I want to give them some sort of support and help them to plan for the future, but they are frequently disputing and I don’t know where to start. The situation has turned into a major family issue, and my parents’ relationship has been seriously tested because of it. I am planning on joining a local NAMI chapter, but otherwise, I am stuck. How can I start the process of getting help for my sister and parents?

Smoking Cessation
I successfully quit smoking (decades-long habit) a full year ago; I have recently begun experiencing dreadful tastes with every breath I draw. I can best describe these tastes as "wet ashtray". Mouthwashes of various types, extreme brushing of teeth/tongue/reachable areas of throat do not help, nor does eating strong-flavored foods.
My medical doctor has never heard of this and offers no suggestions. Any insight you can offer would be much appreciated.
I was told by a psychiatrist once that smoking would help the kind of depression that I have. So, I tried to get rid of my depression by chain smoking. Instead of helping, my depression worsened and I developed a pulmonary condition. I guess he doesn't subscribe to the doctrine "above all else, cause no harm" . Do you think that psychiatrists should tell their patients not to smoke? Or do you think that there are certain psychiatric conditions that benifit from smoking and outway the major and likely risk of dying from lung cancer, stroke or heart disease?
Is it common for people who give up smoking to suffer increased depression or anxiety, over and above the physical cravings? I gave up five months ago, and after about a month became very depressed, and started suffering panic attacks.
This lasted about a month and gradually got better. But I've heard of this happening to other people, and it was suggested to me that it may be part of the rebalancing process of the various hormones that affect brain function. I had no other major stresses in my life when this happened, and was well over the physical craving stage of giving up, which really only lasts a few days.
