Columbia Researchers Find Diet Matters

Almost 5 million people in the U.S. currently have Alzheimer''s Disease. It causes severe mental decline that puts a huge burden on both patients and their families. While genetics contribute to a person''s risk for the illness, new research finds that following a Mediterranean-style diet may also have an impact…Alzheimer’s disease is a reason for dementia, a type of dementia, the most common one," said Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas, of Columbia University Medical Center. However, modifiable lifestyle factors may play a role in a person''s risk for the illness as well. Scarmeas led research that measured whether exercise and a Mediterranean-type diet, separately and in combination with each other, affected risk for Alzheimer''s in 2,000 elderly New Yorkers..
