Come Look Through a Telescope at the Stars Every Wednesday and Saturday Night in 2009!
The Inwood Astronomy Project is the largest public outreach program in New York City, hoping to get 5000 New Yorkers to come look through a telescope for the first time.
We will be out all the clear nights in New York in 2009, looking at the stars and planets. We''ll be giving away posters, postcards, and other doodads. Great for families and kids, we will show that the wonder of the night sky is something that all New Yorkers can enjoy. There is always a telescope to look through, and a knowledgeable astronomer to answer questions. It is great for kids. It''s free and open to the public.
We always start our events at the entrance to Inwood Hill Park at the corner of Seaman and Isham Streets. About 30 minutes after we start, we go to the hilltop observing site. To get to the hilltop, walk into the park towards the flagpole, turn left behind the tennis courts. You will see a stone stairway to your right. Go up. There are no lights, so bring a flashlight. When you get to the top, look right and you''ll see a clearing about 20 yards off the path. That is where we are.
To arrive by subway, take the "A" train to the last stop. Come out the stairs at the front of the train, and go up the hill alongside the church. This entrance is right in front of you. The distance between the Meeting Place and the subway is two short blocks at Isham and Seaman Streets.
