Columbia University Medical Center NewsroomCUMC Expert Resources
| Robin Goland, M.D. , Diabetes has consistently been identified as one of the greatest public health scourges of our time—leading to numerous, frequently life-threatening health complications and affecting nearly 10% of the United States population. With diabetes on the rise year after year, a staggering number of Americans will ultimately require medical care for the disease. Yet, despite documented improvements in treatment since the mid-1990s, 20 percent of diabetes patients continue to struggle with poor glucose control—while another 33 and 40 percent have ongoing blood pressure and cholesterol problems, respectively (Centers for Disease Control report, 2005). Dr. Robin Goland, associate professor of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and co-founder and co-director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center, can discuss what improvements in care are needed to get the diabetes epidemic under control, as well as the latest developments in diabetes prevention, research, and treatment. Dr. Goland leads the patient care program at Columbia''''s nationally renowned Berrie Center, where she and her staff treat more than 8,000 adults and children with diabetes annually. Dr. Goland is also a noted clinical investigator with numerous research accomplishments to her credit: She was among the first to report about the increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in adolescents and young adults, and pioneered an insulin pump program at the Berrie Center for patients with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Goland continues to focus her research efforts on translating basic science findings into meaningful therapeutic advances for diabetes care.
