Over the course of recent decades, the world of medicine has seen rapid-fire, even revolutionary breakthroughs—unprecedented developments that have greatly improved human health and prolonged human life. But with the largely uncharted territory of progress and innovation has come questions about the ethics and moral implications of numerous medical advancements. Dr. Ruth Fischbach, professor of bioethics at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, can speak with authority about a variety of bioethical issues facing the medical community today.

The co-founder and director of the Center for Bioethics at Columbia University (www.bioethicscolumbia.org), Dr. Fischbach previously was the Senior Advisor for Biomedical Ethics in the Director''s Office at the National Institutes of Health, served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School and Washington University, and helped to establish the Tuskegee Center for Bioethics (for which she was presented a National Institutes of Health Merit Award). Dr. Fischbach's special areas of interest and expertise include privacy and informed consent issues in research, ethics in stem-cell research and assisted reproduction, neuroethics, pain assessment and management, conflicts of interest, and end-of-life concerns.

For press inquiries, please contact Elizabeth Streich (eas2125@columbia.edu or 212-305-6535) or Alex Lyda (mal2133@columbia.edu or 212-305-0820).
