Columbia University Medical Center NewsroomCUMC Expert Resources
| Michael Rosenbaum, M.D. , Despite the staggering number of diet products and weight-loss services currently on the market, the obesity problem in the United States is soaring and shows no signs of abating. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 65% of U.S. adults are overweight and 32% are obese, up from 46% and 14% twenty-five years ago. In the United States, obesity currently accounts for approximately 300,000 deaths per year and over 120 billion dollars in direct and indirect annual health care costs. Dr. Michael Rosenbaum, associate professor of clinical pediatrics and clinical medicine and associate program director of the General Clinical Research Center at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, has studied the biological basis of obesity for more than 20 years. He can discuss the medical and economic implications of the obesity epidemic, the biology of body weight regulation, and the prevention and treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases in adults and children. He has designed and collaborated on numerous studies that address the biological and genetic causes of obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as the prevention of these diseases in children and adults. Dr. Rosenbaum's work has identified many of the reasons that it so hard to keep weight off and may provide clues as to how to get our bodies to work with us, as opposed to against us, in sustaining weight reduction.
