Back-to-school time is now upon us, leaving parents to ponder not just the ins and outs of shopping for school supplies, but also what health and medical issues they should be concerned about as their children prepare to return to class. Dr. Pamela Gallin, director of pediatric ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center, can speak with authority about any number of school-related health concerns, including vision, hearing, and nutritional matters; sports-related injuries; immunization updates and more.

Dr. Gallin is the author of “The Savvy Mom''s Guide to Medical Care,” a self-help book that teaches parents how to obtain the best and most effective medical care for their children. She has compiled a back-to-school health checklist, now available on WebMD and MedicineNet.com, to help children and their parents stay on top of school health issues and requirements.

A well-known, well-respected patient advocate, Dr. Gallin has written or co-written several books and articles on navigating the health care system, including “How to Survive Your Doctor's Care” and “How Doctors Gamble With Your Life.”
