Dr. Le Melle is currently the Associate Director of the Washington Heights Community Services at New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr Le Melle was the Clinical Director of New York State Psychiatric Institute from 2004-2008. She is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University. Dr. Le Melle received her MD from Mt Sinai School of Medicine and her MS in Molecular Biology from Hunter College CUNY. She did her psychiatry residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and then completed the Public Psychiatry Fellowship also at Columbia.
Dr. Le Melle's areas of interest are public psychiatry and the treatment and care of people with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), particularly people with schizophrenia. br>
Dr. Le Melle is the course director for the Public Psychiatry Lecture series that is taught throughout the 4 year residency training program. She is also a consultant and teacher for the Columbia University HIV and Mental Health Training Project that trains clinicians how to address HIV prevention and treatment of people with SPMI. She is an active member of NAMI and has worked closely with NAMI and other advocacy organizations in the Upper Manhattan Community.
Dr. Le Melle is the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Pathways to housing. She has worked to promote the “Housing First Model” that was developed by Pathways to Housing as a major form of housing for people with severe and persistent mentally illness.
Dr. Le Melle is also involved with the Mac Arthur Foundation's Network on Mandated Community Treatment. She is particularly interested in how housing is used as leverage to engage people in psychiatric treatment. She is also the Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) Coordinator for NYSPI and is interested in the relationship between the mental health system and the criminal justice system.
