Dr. Kavanagh is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and has served since 2010 as Medical Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute's PI Residents' Clinic (PIRC), an 800-patient, outpatient training clinic for third and fourth year psychiatry residents where residents learn a wide spectrum of treatment modalities.
Prior to this role, she was an attending for 3 years at Columbia's Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) under Dr. Mary Sciutto, where she managed more acutely ill outpatients and supervised PGY2 residents and medical students. She also taught Columbia College P&S medical students in psychiatric interviewing course under Dr. Janis Cutler.
Dr. Kavanagh was a middle school and high school teacher prior to attending medical school and continues to focus mainly on clinical care and teaching. In partnership with Dr. Melissa Arbuckle and clinician educators at Yale, she created and teaches a course called the Psychopharmacology Prescribing Workshop a year-long course for psychiatry residents.
In 2014, she was awarded the Roger A. MacKinnon Teacher of the Year Award chosen by Columbia's psychiatry residents. In 2007, when she was a Chief Resident in psychiatry at Columbia, she was awarded the Barbara A. Liskin Prize for an outstanding resident. Dr. Kavanagh is currently a 5th year candidate at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Research and Training and has a private practice.
